What is the California Highway Patrol - CHP?
The California Highway Patrol is the largest state police agency in the United States, with more than 10,700 employees working from 140 different locations, 7,500 of whom are sworn officers. The CHP was created in 1929 to provide uniform traffic law enforcement throughout the state by assuring the safe, convenient and efficient transportation of people and goods on California’s highway system. The CHP is considered one of the most prestigious police agencies in the United States.
Qualifications for CHP Officers
Age: 20-35 years of age (as of Application Close Date in most current exam cycle).
Education: High school diploma, GED, or California High School Proficiency Examination.
Conduct: No felony convictions and good personal conduct; must possess a California driver license upon appointment to the Academy.
Citizenship: US Citizen or permanent resident who is eligible and has applied for citizenship; must be a United States citizen at time of appointment.
Vision: If eyeglasses or hard contact lenses are worn, uncorrected vision must be no less than 20/40 in each eye and corrected to 20/20 in each eye.
Health: Must be free from any physical, mental or emotional condition that would prohibit the full performance of all the essential duties of a CHP officer.
CHP Hiring Process?
Submit CHP employment application.
Pass the CHP Physical Abilities Test.
Pass the PELLETB written test.
Pass the CHP background investigation.
Pass the CVSA Truth Verification Exam, the Psych Exam and Medical exams.
Complete 27-weeks of training at the California Highway Patrol Academy.
12-month officer probationary period.
What is the CHP Written Exam?
The CHP uses the PELLETB (next paragraph) for their written exam. Over 10,000 applications per year are received for Officer positions. Only 5-6% of all applicants will be successful in getting accepted to the academy. Good preparation is essential.

15 multiple choice Spelling questions
15 multiple choice Vocabulary questions
20 multiple choice questions on Reading Comprehension where the student reads different passages about policies or reports, then answers questions abut what they read.
40 questions on a CLOZE Reading Test - the Most Challenging part of the test.
